Nothing says true love like the glimmer of a diamond or the sparkling smile of its recipient. With the introduction of lab-grown diamonds at McCalls, the allure of this precious stone has never been more irresistible.

Lab-grown diamonds are the most revolutionary development to be seen by the jewellery industry in recent years. Officially recognised by the GIA and IGI, lab-grown diamonds are evaluated and graded using the same strict standards as natural diamonds. Chemically and physically the same as natural stones, they provide an exciting opportunity for our customers to acquire a larger stone for a fairer price. Due to advances in modern science, laboratories can now replicate the conditions needed for diamonds to develop naturally. This process results in diamonds that are equally stunning to earth diamonds.

At McCalls Jewellers, we offer our customers the opportunity to get more for their money without the need to compromise on quality. The industry-accepted measure of diamond quality is referred to as the 4Cs; cut, colour, clarity, and carat. However, at McCalls, we ask that you consider an unspoken 5th C; conscience. With the introduction of lab-grown diamonds, McCalls offers you a more ethical way to say "I Love You".

The 4 Cs of Diamond Quality

When discussing the 4 Cs, many often start with the cut of a diamond. With diamonds, each style of cut tells a different story. An old-cut diamond may have less sparkle but features deep proportions and more warmth. Meanwhile, a brilliant-cut diamond welcomes the optimum amount of light to flow through its crown. As this light is reflected, refracted and dispersed through the stone, it exhibits that universally admired fire and sparkle sought by diamond lovers everywhere.

The colour of the diamond is another factor to be considered. A diamond can range from an icy white to a soft yellow. To the untrained eye, this difference may be only slight. However, when comparing diamonds side by side, their colour is unmistakable. The most pristine, colourless, white diamonds are the rarest and thus the most valuable.

The next element of the 4 Cs is clarity. To ascertain the clarity of a diamond, we must consider any tiny inclusions or blemishes through the stone. These are small characteristics that form within the diamond as it develops. No diamond is 100% pure, but the purest stones are considered flawless. A flawless stone is the rarest and therefore holds the most value.

The last of the 4 Cs is the carat weight. Simply put, the carat weight measures how much a diamond weighs. Where the cut, colour and clarity of two stones are equal, the more valuable would be the one with the greater carat weight as larger diamonds are rarer and more sought-after.

The Unspoken 5th C

At McCalls, we ask our customers to consider a 5th C; conscience. The most significant advantage of lab-grown diamonds is the decreased demand for mined stones. This means less harm to the environment, considerably reduced CO2 emissions and the assurance that the stones are ethically produced and conflict-free.

Laboratory production is considerably less costly than mining, and thus the price of the end product reflects this. A lab-grown diamond, with the same qualities as a natural diamond, can be bought, free of any moral dilemmas, for a fraction of the price.

"A GEM of a shop.

Antique jewellery at reasonable prices is sold exclusively by knowledgeable, super helpful, and intuitive staff. It's a pleasure to visit and with what is an almost bespoke service you are always going to find what you are looking for.”

Gwyneth Hardy - Google

“I recently purchased a vintage engagement ring for my girlfriend at McCalls.

They were all extremely nice helping me choose the right ring for my budget. After a couple of weeks, we came back for resizing the ring (free of charge, as specified at the time of purchase) and we got all the advice we needed. Because of a little mix-up, the resizing took a bit longer than estimated, but we received a surprise bottle of Prosecco as a token of apology… I would not hesitate in recommending McCalls to my friends.”

Luca Cattaneo - Google

“Friendly helpful staff, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them to anyone!

Amazed with the 1-day resizing service I received on a Thumb ring (including an unexpected polish)and very reasonably priced. A pleasure to deal with from start to finish
